Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.

The lyrics of "Beautiful Boy" contain the famous Lennon quote "Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans." And, like most of Lennon’s aethereal lyrics, when you finally get a minute to consider it, it rings completely true, life almost seems to happen without us.

But wherever you go, however successful you may become or however much you ‘de-clutter’ your life, you’ll likely encounter that very same feeling.  A good friend of mine always says ‘I’m so busy, if I only had a day, just one day, with nothing in it!’ Well, let’s face it, if you are over the age of about 16, if you’ve got children, a home or a job, you’ll be hard pushed to counter the chaos that everyday life brings.

Let’s think of it like this… say you made your way to that far off secluded desert island you dream of. There’s still water to find and collect, food to catch and grow.  Ok so we might not have to take the kids to football practice or take the car for its MOT but there’s still so much to do. You would soon find yourself busy with essential tasks, wondering where the time went.

While back in the real world we are privileged enough to have plentiful resources. Perhaps in this modern world we have essentially replaced the survival instinct with a need to thrive. Of course, each person’s idea of essential tasks in order to thrive will be different, but at some point you’ll probably have to get the car MOT’d.
