Your application to the Super Hero Club has been unsuccessful

About this time last year, I wrote a blog post about managing with kids in the long summer holidays, whilst trying to run your own business.  Last year's approach (6 weeks at home) didn't work.  I nearly lost my marbles.  This year's approach, 3 weeks in France (lucky us) followed by 3 weeks at home, isn't working either....... The 3 weeks in France was TOTALLY AWESOME and I loved it but the little day dream that I had, that I would work for a couple of hours in the morning to keep on top of Spice Pots stuff, was ridiculous.  I did a sum total of about an hours work and that was just dealing with stuff that I absolutely could...

January sucks.......

Have you fallen off the wagon of resolutions yet? It’s hard in January - you are skint, you’ve had the kids at home for quite a while, your routine is shot and you feel like a pickled whale.  It’s dark and cold. To top it all off, everyone is telling you to do things you don’t want to do, like:a.) lose weightb.) be healthierc.) not drink any alcohold.) be amazing and beautiful all the timee.) not drink any alcoholf.) be the perfect parentg.) be a domestic goddessNOOOOOOOO!  Well, I say, stuff your face with curry and be happy.    And don’t drink before 8pm except on special occasions, bank holidays, weekends or weekdays beginning with the letter ‘T’.Actually, you can stuff your...

A Spice Pot Dinner in Aid of Kipawa

My fabulous friend, Abby Ingham, is running her 3rd marathon in April next year.   I actually think she's mental but I'm full of admiration for her (and all you other marathon runners). I hadn't quite realized, before knowing Abby, how much much time it takes up and what a commitment it is, especially when you are already short on time with 3 kids and a job.Abby is organising a number of events to raise money for Kipawa and this will secure her place in the London Marathon in April 2017. Kipawa Trust International is a Scottish-based charity which provides feeding programmes and other health and counselling services for school children living in poverty in Kenya. Read more about Kipawa and they work they do here.So,...

The Summer Holidays

For the first time this year, I was actually quite looking forward to the Summer Holidays with my boys.  It will be lovely. I will do a couple of hours work each morning whilst the boys play quietly and then we'll go for a wholesome family picnic on the beach with our dog.  I breezed into it all quite calmly and without making any plans - we don't need activities, we'll just hang out.  No!  We don't need to go abroad, we will enjoy the beautiful place we live...Fast forward 5 weeks and 5 days.......The kids all are in Holiday Club today all day - from 9.00am to 6.00pm. The only reason that they didn't start at 8.00am was that...

The Royal Highland Show 2016 - Edinburgh

It's been a while - I've been at the Royal Highland Show - and am only just catching up.I am lucky enough to live and work in East Lothian and am part of a growing network of food and drink producers from the area. Last week we were at the RHS where we all collectively exhibit under the very supportive umbrella of East Lothian Food and Drink.  I enjoyed the show immensely (apart from the 5.30am starts) - chatting with the other local food and drink business' always gets the creative juices flowing and receiving feedback from the punters gives me a boost!  It can be quite isolating running your own business and so it's great to get out there.So,...
